Andaman, India

Andaman and Nicobar islands are located in one of the farthest corners of India. You can reach to Port Blair by a flight or by a ship. Tourists usually start their journey from Port Blair. The city has lot of hotels and is well connected to rest of the country. Considering the ecology of the islands, a lot of industrial activities are restricted. Which means, tourism is the main source of income for a lot of residents of this island as well as some of the other islands populated with "modern society".

Light and sound show at Cellular Jail

One of the main tourist attractions, especially for students for history, is Cellular Jail. This is one of the left overs from the dark pages of British Raj. A jail on a remote island surrounded by wilderness. It is said that Britishers would not spend money on building big walls around the jail because they were sure that it is the safest place on the island; even prisoner would not leave it. Even if they survive the mosquitos, snakes, and other things on the island, no one would survive the sea surrounding the island. Originally it was proposed that 7 wings of the building will be designed all connected to a central watch tower like a bicycle tire. This way a single tower can look over all the wings of the jail. However, in the end only 2 of the wings were finished. The punishment of this jail had its own infamous name - "Kala Pani (Black waters)". If you want to learn more about Cellular jail, you can attend the light and sound show later in the evening.

Port Blair also has an Anthropological Museum, Fisheries Museum and a Naval Marine Museum (Samudrika). For outdoor people there is a North Bay Beach and Chidiya Tappu (bird island). Chidiya Tappu is famous for beautiful sunsets (in addition to birds).

There are a few more islands which are famous among tourists. Main among these are Viper island, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose island (previously Ross island), and Havelock island.

Before the infamous Cellular jail was built, prisoners were kept and tortured in a jail at Viper island. There are still some structures remaining. One of the main sites here is the place where prisoners were left hanging over night or for couple of days so that insects, snakes, and other creature could torture them.

Ross island has remains of the British settlements. There are photographs available of the days when this island was used by the British for their forces. There was a Bakery, printing press, a church and lot of other buildings. Now there are only some remains of those buildings but if you are good with photography, you would enjoy this island for a different type of photography.

Havelock island is for people who enjoy beaches and sea. If you want to do some scuba diving, this is the place to be. You can see some beautiful corals under waters. You can take a ferry ride to Elephant beach. Its one of the less crowded beaches but it is one of the most beautiful beaches. Havelock island also has lot of Mangrove trees. If you haven't seen Mangrove trees before, its a treat to watch them with their roots standing above the grounds. And of course, you get to see stunning sunrises and sunsets at all of these places.
